MOVING Policy Brief - Olive Oil Value Chain Sustainability

Supporting sustainable mountain olive oil value chains through governance reform, quality certification, and equitable collaboration

or

Detail description

MOVING project explores challenges and policy solutions for sustainable mountain value chains, focusing on the Betic organic olive oil value chain. It addresses tensions between preserving ancient olive trees for biodiversity and achieving economic viability through modern systems. Key issues include power imbalances in cooperatives, weak producer organisation, food fraud, and poor communication. Recommendations emphasize multi-actor collaboration, equitable profit-sharing, and integrating quality labels like organic and mountain product certifications with UNESCO World Heritage status. Flexible standards, participatory guarantee systems, and targeted funding for small-scale mountain VCs are proposed to enhance resilience, trust, and market access. Policies align with Cluster V goals on sustainability, ecological resilience, and economic attractiveness.
