Biochar production and heat generation via slow pyrolysis

Continuously operating pyrolysis unit for high-quality biochar production with carbon recovery and renewable energy surplus

or

Detail description

The Carbofex de-carbonizer is an intermediate pyrolysis unit using an indirectly heated screw reactor to convert biomass into high-quality biochar, pyrolysis oil, and syngas. It operates continuously with precise control over temperature and residence time, ensuring consistent output. The process achieves over 50% carbon recovery and is energy-positive, generating surplus renewable energy for cooling and desalination. The biochar is pure, meets all regulatory standards, and is approved for organic food production. Sourced from PEFC-certified biomass, the technology supports diverse feedstocks and produces low PAH levels and minimal emissions. The plant in Hiedanranta, Tampere, Finland, has been operational since 2017, processing 500 kg of wood chips per hour, yielding 140 kg of biochar and 700 tons of biochar and 600 tons of pyrolysis oil annually. It is Europe’s largest EBC-certified biochar producer.
