Microchip: Local Wood Pellet Alternative for Stoves

Locally produced wood chip alternative for pellet stoves with lower cost and higher traceability

or

Detail description

Microchips are small, locally produced wood chips (7 mm) made from underutilised forest residues using low-investment technology. They serve as a cost-effective, traceable alternative to industrial pellets in standard pellet stoves after minor adaptations. Pioneered by the Travaglini Bros. in Tuscany, Italy since 2010, the process supports rural bioeconomy by repurposing waste wood, reducing dependency on imported pellets, and creating local jobs. With an initial investment of €38,000, the operation achieved profitability and expanded over three years, demonstrating viability for small-scale biomass energy in agriculture and forestry.
