Strengthening Ireland's organic farming sector through research, innovation, and market development (2018–2021)
or
Detail description
Factsheet summarising findings from the EU-funded MOPS project (2018–2021), which strengthened Ireland’s organic farming sector by reducing reliance on imported produce, lowering production costs, and closing seasonal supply gaps. Led by MOPS CLG and the Irish Organic Association, the project delivered on-farm trials of green manures (rye/phacelia, clover), baseline data collection, and capacity building. Results showed a 112% sales increase and 371% trade growth for participating farms, with 40% of crop areas adopting improved practices. The project enhanced market access via retailer partnerships and demonstrated resilience during Brexit and COVID-19. Key lessons include the value of pilot phases and legal clarity for organic production. Outcomes support sector-wide sustainability and growth through collaboration and adaptive planning.
