Sustainable agriculture and farm sustainability: a survey and proposal of revisited definitions in the light of values, properties and boundaries of agriculture sustainability

This article contributes to the launch of the Erytage network by analyzing the concepts of sustainable agriculture and farm sustainability. The first part examines different sustainable development frameworks to categorize current positions on sustainable agriculture. The second part offers a state-of-the-art literature review using both chronological and interpretative analyses. Based on these insights, the authors propose a new definition of sustainable agriculture that integrates core principles, values and associated social objectives. Finally, drawing on research into farm sustainability, they present an expanded definition encompassing principles, values, societal goals and key system properties required for long-term viability.
