Double-purpose feeding strategy, by using local oilseeds by-products in order to mitigate GHG small ruminants’ diets while gaining side-advantages

Using locally available oilseed by-products in small ruminant diets can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving feed value and milk quality.

Descrizione dettagliata

This practice abstract presents a feeding strategy based on the use of locally available oilseed by-products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from small ruminant production systems.

Oilseed cakes remaining after mechanical oil extraction contain residual lipids that can contribute to lower methane emissions from rumen fermentation. These feed resources can partially replace dietary starch while potentially improving the fatty acid composition of milk and creating opportunities for higher-value dairy products.

The practice promotes the use of local feed resources, supports circular economy approaches and may reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10–15%, while also contributing to improved feed efficiency and product quality.
