Descrizione dettagliata

This practice abstract presents the introduction of cover crops in loamy soils to improve soil health and support climate change mitigation. In the Lauragais region of south-west France, cover crops are used to increase soil carbon storage, reduce erosion, and improve soil fertility.

Species such as faba bean, phacelia, sorghum and moha can contribute to nitrogen savings and improved nutrient cycling. The system combines summer and winter cover crops and relies on mechanical destruction instead of glyphosate.

Farm experience shows that cover crops can reduce fertiliser requirements, increase carbon sequestration, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions while supporting sustainable crop production systems.
