Evaluation of Low-Input Tree Crop Systems and Transfer to Growers

This study assesses innovative low-input orchard systems for apple, peach, and plum that combine reduced irrigation, fertilization, and phytosanitary inputs to maintain agronomic and economic performance, compared with conventional integrated and organic orchards, and disseminates findings to growers through field demonstrations.

Description détaillée

The project evaluated low-input orchard management for three major fruit species—apple, peach, and plum—by integrating reduced irrigation, fertilization, and synthetic plant protection products into a coherent system. These low-input prototypes were compared against reference orchards managed under integrated production and, at some sites, organic standards. Experiments were conducted across multiple partner stations to test agronomic performance, economic viability, and environmental impact via Life Cycle Assessment and functional biodiversity indicators. Regular exchanges and on-site demonstrations facilitated knowledge transfer to professionals, inspiring producers to adopt practices that balance economic outcomes with environmental protection. The trial designs from Casdar 2011–2013 have been incorporated into ongoing Dephy Ecophyto calls for further tree crop experimentation.
