Pesticide Effects on Honeybee Foragers' Homing Flight: A Scientific Saga Motivated by Controversy

In 2012, researchers tagged 650 honeybee foragers with RFID microchips and exposed half to a sublethal dose of thiamethoxam, the active ingredient in Cruiser® pesticides. Field data showed treated bees were two to three times more likely to fail homing flights compared to controls. The findings sparked controversy over dose realism and extrapolation to colony-level effects, prompting a series of studies to fill knowledge gaps. Subsequent investigations confirmed that landscape, climatic conditions, and sanitary status modulate neonicotinoid toxicity, and reinforced the evidence that field-realistic exposure accelerates worker disappearance under real-world conditions.
