In this study, the authors propose a multi-criteria phenotyping approach to dissect partial resistance of carrot (Daucus carota) to the leaf blight pathogen Alternaria dauci. Conventional visual scoring of disease symptoms fails to capture the complex infection cycle, so they implemented complementary techniques to target both asymptomatic and symptomatic phases, including quantitative PCR for fungal DNA detection, infrared thermography to monitor tissue temperature changes, and chlorophyll fluorescence measurement to assess photosynthetic disruptions. They discuss the reproducibility, discriminating power, throughput potential, and limitations of each method for large-scale varietal evaluation and QTL mapping strategies.
