Characterization of soil biological functioning in organic viticulture by nematofauna analysis

The study evaluates the impact of converting conventional vineyards to organic management on soil biological activity using nematode communities, finding significant increases in activity only after at least 11 years and no enhancement of soil food web complexity.

In this study, 24 vineyard plots in Cruscades (Aude, France) under conventional or organic management for 7, 11, or 17 years were compared to evaluate the impact of organic conversion on soil biological quality. Ninety-six soil samples (0–15 cm) were analyzed for nematode communities. Results showed that longer duration of organic viticulture corresponded with higher soil biological activity, marked by abundant non-plant-parasitic nematodes, with statistically significant effects after at least 11 years. However, the functional diversity and complexity of the soil food web, measured by the structure index, did not improve under organic management.
