Co-designing Organic Residue Recycling Chains in Réunion

This paper presents a participatory process in western Réunion to co-design and evaluate recycling pathways for agricultural, urban and agro-industrial organic residues, proposing minimal and optimal scenarios of co-compost production and concentrated organic/organo-mineral fertilizer to reduce imported fertilizer dependency.

Täpsem kirjeldus

The study describes a collaborative project in western Réunion aimed at closing biogeochemical loops by recycling organic residues from agriculture, urban areas, and agro-industry. Stakeholders joined participatory design workshops to develop prospective scenarios: a minimal scenario producing a bulk co-compost from livestock manure and green waste, and an optimal scenario extending this to industrial‐scale production of concentrated organic and organo-mineral fertilizers. Although topographical and equipment constraints restrict local agro-ecological gains, the optimal scenario could ultimately substitute over half of imported fertilizers in the region, enhancing nutrient self-sufficiency.
