Mixed Grass-Legume Grasslands: How to Breed Adapted Varieties to Increase Productivity and Ease Management
This paper evaluates grass-legume mixtures, focusing on how variety performance differs between monocultures and mixtures; it reports additive effects for biomass yield and proposes breeding and evaluation methods to improve mixture performance.

Täpsem kirjeldus
This study examines grasslands sown with grass–legume mixtures, emphasizing alfalfa–grass combinations. It reveals that the ranking of alfalfa genotypes for biomass yield changes when grown in mixture versus monoculture. Despite this, total biomass production in mixtures is primarily the sum of each species’ contribution, with no significant interactions detected. The authors argue for integrating mixture performance into the breeding process and variety evaluation. They propose methods to select and assess plant varieties based on their performance in mixtures, aiming to boost productivity, reduce nitrogen fertilizer use, and simplify grassland management.
