Making your own hay or outsourcing it: at what cost?

Hay is a staple forage in horse nutrition. It can cover 60 to 100% of dietary needs depending on the horse's activity or type. Some farms have the hay made by a third party in exchange for part of the production, while others make it entirely themselves. Is it financially more advantageous to make it yourself or outsource it?
