Halophytes Salicornia europaea and Salicornia ramosissima show high potential as biogas feedstocks under saline conditions. Biomethane yields reached 250 mL CH4/gVS for S. europaea and up to 300 mL CH4/gVS for S. ramosissima, with no inhibition observed at NaCl concentrations up to 2400 mg/L. Drying or fractionating biomass increased yields to 149 m3 CH4/t. The study, part of the AQUACOMBINE project, explores circular integration of aquaculture, farming, and bioprocessing for bioenergy and bioproducts.
