A Practical Model for Engaging Citizens in Farm Animal Breeding Decisions

This document presents the Room of Acceptance model, which gauged European citizens' acceptance of new ruminant breeding technologies based on criteria including animal welfare, environmental impact, benefit sharing, and transparent governance. It highlights the importance of addressing potential long-term risks and engaging the public early to enhance trust and adoption of innovations like genomic selection and genome editing.

Detail description

The document details the RUMIGEN project’s development and testing of the Room of Acceptance (RoA) model, which explores European citizens’ values underlying acceptance of ruminant breeding technologies. Conducted across nine EU countries with 787 participants, deliberative consultations revealed that acceptance hinges on technology-specific factors: respect for animal welfare, minimization of environmental impact, equitable benefit-sharing, and transparent governance. Participants expressed the greatest concern over unforeseen long-term risks. The findings suggest that breeders and farmers can enhance public support by applying these criteria to innovations—such as genomic selection and genome editing—and engaging in early, open dialogue to build trust and ensure sustainable adoption.
