Detail description
The BroilerNet project involves a bottom-up approach to identify challenges and innovation needs for broiler farmers in Europe, and to collect promising and already successfully implemented Good Practices to meet the challenges in questions. The top Good Practices selected by experts within the three thematic areas (animal health management, animal welfare and sustainability) have been summarized in factsheets.
The Finnish national production method, All in–All out No thinning, includes the fact that all chicks are delivered to the rearing farm at once and the entire flock is also sent to be slaughtered at the same time.
This approach reduces stress and the risk of injury for the birds, as they are handled and loaded only once in their lifetime. The fasting is only done once, which reduces stress even more.
The broiler houses are emptied, washed, dried and disinfected carefully between breeding batches.
Before the next flock arrives, a layer of peat is spread in the hall in time to allow it to warm up. The rearing environment is prepared to optimally meet the chicks’ needs. This ensures the best possible start for the chicks. All in all out method has been proven effective as the production broilers have not been medicated at all since 2009.
