Stripcropping can reduce the risk of pests and diseases by increasing crop diversity within fields, acting like “social distancing” for crops. By separating strips of the same crop with other crops, the spread of mobile pests and pathogens (such as insects or wind-dispersed diseases) is slowed. However, poorly planned rotations can increase risks from immobile, soil‑borne pests and diseases, making careful design essential. Techniques such as the “hop‑skip‑jump” rotation—leaving at least one strip gap before replanting a susceptible crop—can help prevent these problems. Stripcropping also supports natural enemies of pests by providing diverse habitats and food sources, improving ecological balance. When combined with good crop rotation and habitat management, stripcropping increases system resilience and supports more sustainable pest and disease control.
