The treatment of clinical mastitis in dairy cows using essential oils

Field trials have enabled the treatment of 100 cases of clinical mastitis by intramammary injection of 10 ml of a preparation based on essential oils. A formulation based on Thymus satureoides oil, Rosmarinus verbenone and Laurus nobilis (1.5% each in sunflower oil) was tested on 55 cases of mastitis. The remaining 45 cases were treated with Thymus vulgaris and Rosmarinus verbenone alone (6% each, in an oil solution or aqueous suspension). The cure rate, which was comparable regardless of the medication tested, was only around 40% of cases.
