Free choice feeding for laying hens: nutrient self-regulation system
Free choice feeding enables laying hens to self-regulate intake of energy, protein, and calcium for improved nutrition and welfare.

Detail description
Free choice feeding allows laying hens to self-regulate intake of energy, protein (with vitamins and minerals), and calcium through three separate components, supporting natural behaviour and improving nutrient balance. This system enhances feed efficiency, reduces costs—especially in mobile housing with access to young grass—and supports sustainable organic poultry farming. Hens should be introduced at 15 weeks, with a 2–3 week transition to whole grains for gizzard adaptation. Energy feed is starch-rich, protein feed is high in nutrients, and calcium feed is concentrated. Vitamins and trace elements must not be offered separately to prevent imbalances. At least two hanging troughs per 100 hens per component ensure access. The ration switches to a laying supplement when egg production starts. Supported by OK-Net EcoFeed and Organic Farm Knowledge, this method promotes animal welfare and feed cost reduction.
