Essential oils provide an effective, low-cost alternative to antibiotics for treating mastitis in dairy cattle, reducing antibiotic dependency and ecological impact. Backed by the RELACS initiative, a standardised on-farm protocol ensures consistent application. These oils offer antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits, supporting both treatment and prevention. At €8 per session, essential oil therapy is cheaper than antibiotics (€18), though it requires more labour and extends treatment time from two to seven days.
