Detail description

The BioRural SW EU-Challenge workshop in Valladolid (27–28 November 2025) highlighted 13 innovative circular bioeconomy initiatives from Spain, Portugal, and Italy. Key projects include AgroBioTex (Portugal), converting agri-waste and wool into sustainable textiles; Protiberia (Spain), transforming spent mushroom substrate into high-value proteins via insect bioconversion; and Renergy 1.618 & KiRa Technology (Italy), deploying modular systems to generate heat and electricity from forestry residues in mountainous regions. Additional opportunities include biochar production from organic waste for urban decarbonisation, biogas from small-scale biogas plants, and valorisation of coffee grounds, wool keratin, and wine by-products. All projects are in testing, support open innovation, and are funded by the European Union.
