Intercropping grain peas with barley for stable protein production

Intercropping grain peas with barley enhances yield stability and soil health in sustainable farming systems

or

Detail description

Intercropping grain peas with barley improves yield stability and reduces losses in organic farming. Barley provides natural support, minimizing pea lodging and weed pressure, while eliminating the need for nitrogen fertiliser. Recommended sowing ratio is 80:40 peas:barley, with 12 cm row spacing and 3–4 cm seeding depth. Minimal weed control via light harrowing may be used if needed. Harvesting requires modified settings: wider sieves, open threshing concave, lower drum speed, reduced air flow, and aggressive cutting angle. The system supports soil health through reduced tillage and is suitable for heavy soils. To maintain soil quality, the crop should not be grown more than once every seven years, and related legumes should be avoided in rotation. This sustainable practice, developed in Switzerland and supported by OK-Net Arable, enables local protein production and reduces reliance on imported soy.
