Plum Pox Virus Control Strategies for Stone Fruit Orchards
Preventing and managing plum pox virus in stone fruit orchards
or
Detail description
Plum pox virus (PPV), or sharka, is the most destructive viral disease of stone fruit, causing reduced yields, poor fruit quality, and premature drop. Symptoms include chlorotic rings on leaves and fruit deformities. Spread via infected planting material and aphids, with no cure available. Prevention relies on certified virus-free material, resistant varieties (Jojo, Jofela, Joganta, Jolina, Moni), and resistant rootstocks (Docera 6, Dospina 235). Infected trees must be removed, and aphids controlled. The BIOFRUITNET project provides guidance on these practices.
