Slovenia Farms, Agriculture, and Safety Overview 2020–2022

Slovenia had 72,470 farms covering 474,196 hectares in 2020, with 57% permanent grassland, 37% arable, and 6% permanent crops. Livestock farming remained dominant, though livestock farms declined by 23% from 2010 to 2020, averaging 9.1 livestock units per farm. Organic farming grew from 6.4% to 11.1% of agricultural land between 2010 and 2022. In 2022, 76.1% of farms were in less-favoured areas, including 55.6% in mountain regions and 21% in Natura 2000 sites. Slovenia is a net agricultural importer but trades significantly within the EU. Farm income is affected by policy, global markets, and climate risks such as frost, drought, and the 2023 floods.
