Milk quality in Dutch grass-based dairy systems is enhanced through a collaboration between farmers and Delta Instruments, which developed a fatty acid calibration package. Analysis using infrared spectrometry at VWB Veluwe Usselstreek measures key parameters including fat, protein, urea, somatic cell count, and short- and long-chain fatty acids. Findings indicate pasture grass increases short-chain fatty acids (C4–C14), though sample sizes limit statistical reliability. The tool supports individual cow feeding optimization and early detection of ketosis and related metabolic disorders via NEFA and Denovo indicators. Rapid results enable timely management decisions. Future research aims to determine if current grass compositions maximize milk yield or if improved herbaceous grasslands offer greater potential. Clear interpretation of measurements remains a challenge, requiring larger datasets. The initiative demonstrates how precise fatty acid profiling can improve milk quality and farm profitability.
