Nezara viridula in greenhouse pepper cultivation: monitoring, pheromone traps, and biological control methods

or

Detail description

Nezara viridula is an invasive pest in Dutch greenhouse pepper cultivation, with significant impacts on crops like aubergine, cucumber, and gerbera. This study, part of the TKI-LWV19162 project, evaluated various monitoring and control methods. Feromone lures showed limited effectiveness, while yellow sticky traps, maize, and pepper were more attractive. Placing overwintering pests at peak activity times increased catch rates. The entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae (Bio1020) showed the highest volatility and 16% mortality. The parasitic wasp Trissolcus boscalis shows strong potential for biological control. Podius species effectively suppress Nezara at high densities but struggle at low levels. Podius v. bassilis preys on other Podius species but does not affect Orius laticaudus. Field trials confirmed Podius efficacy in commercial pepper greenhouses.
