Vorm snoeien van hazelaars
Vase-shaped hazel cultivation on a single stem for improved harvesting and mechanisation
or
Detail description
The hazel naturally grows as a multi-stemmed bush, but the vase-shaped single-stem form is preferred for cultivation. This form improves mechanical harvesting and soil management. It is created by pruning vertical shoots from the stool or rootstock, using either Common Hazel (Corylus avellana) or Turkish Hazel (Corylus colurna). Pruning is performed annually over four growing seasons to establish the desired shape. The vase form supports 40–50 cm main branches with nut-producing spurs. While easier to manage for harvesting and cultivation, it requires more skilled pruning compared to the bush form, which allows simpler replacement of dead branches via ground suckers. Regular sucker removal is essential in the vase form. Contact: Ton.baltissen@cropeye.com. Funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and Province of Gelderland.
