Innovative sustainable fruit cultivation systems for enhanced orchard ecosystems and biodiversity

or

Detail description

Sustainable mixed orchard system in Nieuwerkerk, Netherlands, tests integrated pest and disease management using resistant apple varieties, soil health practices, and biodiversity enhancement. Part of the POP3 EIP project, it applies ecological principles to reduce pesticide use, promote beneficial insects, and improve ecosystem resilience. Key measures include planting five resistant apple varieties (Bosana, Topaz, Nativa, Nokkook, Elstar), leaf littering, targeted fertilisation, sticky traps for apple sawflies, and habitat management. Flower strips, minimal mowing, and composting support biodiversity. Funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and partners, the project demonstrates scalable, sustainable fruit cultivation.
