Heat Stress in Pigs: Temperature and Humidity Management

Heat stress in pigs: thermal limits, measurement, and management on farms

or

Detail description

The ambient temperature must be assessed to ensure thermal comfort for pigs, particularly in finishing and sows with piglets. Measurements should be taken near the area expected to have the highest temperature, away from air inlets and airflow direction. Heat stress begins at 25°C for finishing pigs and 21°C for sows, with high humidity exacerbating the effect. Continuous or instantaneous monitoring of temperature and relative humidity is recommended, with records available for inspection. Signs of heat stress include panting, laboured breathing, and mud wallowing.
