Preventive management of apple scab in fruit cultivation

Innovative sustainable fruit growing systems in Zeeland, 2022–2024

or

Detail description

In apple cultivation, scab management relies on preventive measures within a systemic approach. Key practices include open tree structure, controlled growth, and reducing leaf and ascospore levels through removal of excess foliage, preventing deep wet furrows, avoiding leaf movement, and applying vinasse or other products in autumn. Trials at De Muehof, Nieuwerkerk, using Conference rootstock (over 10 years, 4 x 2 m spacing, light sandy soil), showed enhanced leaf decay under Vinasse Kalt 25% and Complex Aid 30% treatments compared to control. The project, part of Innovations in Sustainable Fruit Growing Systems (2022–2024), involves Delphy, Wageningen University & Research, and local partners, funded by Provincie Zeeland and the European Union.
