Nest-building materials for sows during farrowing – Short review (version 1.0)

This document outlines the role of the EU Reference Centre for Animal Welfare Pigs (EURCAW-Pigs) in advancing pig welfare across the life cycle. It details the centre’s work in supporting compliance with EU animal welfare legislation, including directives on housing, transport, and slaughter. EURCAW-Pigs develops welfare indicators, provides training, and promotes best practices. Research by Westin et al. (2014, 2015) and Yun et al. (2013–2015) demonstrates that access to straw improves nest-building, reduces piglet bruising, and enhances sow performance. The centre supports policymakers, inspectors, and stakeholders through expert guidance and resources.
