Turning Wood Ash into Value in Italy

Valorizing wood ash from biomass plants for agriculture and construction in Italy

or

Detail description

This project addresses the valorization of wood ash from biomass energy plants in Italy, currently classified as special waste and costly to dispose of (€500/ton). It explores sustainable reuse in agriculture, construction, and forest road development, leveraging ash’s nutrient content and slug-deterrent properties. With potential revenue of €5–10/ton, the ProBest initiative promotes local transformation centres in Val Susa, Piedmont, to reduce transport costs and enable pelletization for stable storage. Collaboration involves forestry enterprises, environmental groups (e.g., Legambiente), universities (e.g., University of Turin), and international partners, including Munster Technological University as coordinator.
