Modern Rotational Grazing System for Dairy Cows

Joeri Ham, a Dutch dairy farmer managing 46 hectares, implements a modern rotational grazing system to optimize forage quality and intake for his 70–80 cows. By rotating cattle between two paddocks daily—offering young, leafy grass and older, stemmy grass—he creates a balanced mixed ration in the field. Weekly pasture walks assess grass availability, and fixed wires help maintain paddock boundaries. The system supports consistent dry matter consumption, improves grass utilization, and reflects careful monitoring of cow preferences and field conditions. Funded by the European Union, this sustainable grassland management approach enhances herd health and farm productivity.
