Seasonal calving for optimal grass utilisation

Optimizing grassland use through seasonal calving and rotational grazing

or

Detail description

Auke Spijkerman, a Dutch organic dairy farmer, uses seasonal calving to align with natural grass growth on his 40-hectare pasture. With 100 crossbred dairy cows (Friesian, Jersey, Holstein), he ensures 60% calve in spring for optimal access to high-quality forage. The herd is rotated 7–8 times annually, supporting efficient grass utilisation and reducing soil compaction. Cows receive 1,500 kg of dry matter yearly, with 55–60% of energy from fresh grass. This system enhances milk production while promoting sustainability and pasture health.
