Matching genetics and concentrate-reduced feeding for efficient pasture use

Sustainable pasture-based dairy farming with Black-and-White Lowland Cattle in Ostfriesland

or

Detail description

Johannes Gruben runs a 160-cow organic dairy farm in East Friesland, Germany, transitioning from Holstein-Friesian to the native German Black Pied breed (DSN) to reduce feed costs and improve pasture efficiency. Using a short-sward grazing system and block calving from January to May, he aligns lactation with peak pasture quality, minimizing concentrate use. The shift has enhanced animal health and maintained higher organic milk prices despite lower yields.
