Sward improvement and grazing for higher yield in intensive grazing
Weed management and rotational grazing for sustainable Jersey dairy farming
or
Detail description
Syds-Jan Boersma manages an 82.2-hectare family farm on moor and clay soils, specializing in intensive grazing with 170 Jersey cows. From June to August, he applies a topping strategy—cutting grass just before flowering—to boost pasture quality, increase palatability, and stimulate regrowth. This method enhances forage availability, reduces feed costs, and supports higher animal productivity. Topping is performed only when grass is dry and not overly tall to avoid residue. Combined with rotational grazing, it optimizes yield and quality. The project is EU-funded.
