Use of Pellet-Straw in Broiler Litter

Litter management in broiler farming is critical for animal welfare and environmental sustainability. Poor practices can cause soil and groundwater contamination, harmful gas emissions, and health issues like footpad lesions. Using pelleted straw—compressed cylinders that expand when wet—improves absorption, reduces moisture buildup, and maintains dry conditions even at high bird densities. The Cavina farm in Imola, Italy, uses pelleted straw across four sheds, rearing ~70,000 broilers per cycle. Compared to chopped straw, pelleted straw maintains structural integrity and absorption efficiency longer, reducing odour, supporting recycling, and enhancing sustainability. This innovation blends technology with tradition, improving animal health and environmental outcomes.
