Enhancing Eggshell Thickness with Black Soldier Fly Feeding
Improves eggshell thickness in hens using Black Soldier Fly products across multiple feeding forms and conditions
or
Detail description
This project demonstrates that feeding laying hens Black Soldier Fly (BSF) products—such as defatted meal, whole dry larvae, and live larvae—significantly increases eggshell thickness. Validated across research and industrial settings, the effect requires a minimum of six weeks of feeding, with optimal inclusion at 4–5% on a dry matter basis. The enhanced shell thickness persists for up to three weeks after feeding stops. Results vary by hen age, breed, environment, and diet composition. The initiative is part of the EIP-AGRI programme, funded by the European Union, and shares innovations via EU-FarmBook.
