Sustainable dairy farming and animal welfare in the Parmigiano Reggiano region: innovation, knowledge exchange, and EIP-Agri initiatives
or
Detail description
Dairy cow farming in the Parmigiano Reggiano region balances tradition and innovation for sustainable, high-quality cheese production. This study compares animal welfare in long-lived versus short-cycle dairy cows, finding that lower peak milk yields correlate with improved welfare and higher enterprise gross margins. Supported by the European Union through EIP-Agri and EU-FarmBook, the research highlights how reduced lactation peaks enhance cow well-being and farm profitability.
