MaisSolo: Cover Crop Systems in Ribatejo, Portugal

Cover crops enhance soil health and profitability in Portuguese maize systems

or

Detail description

The MaisSolo project evaluates the economic and ecological performance of cover crops in three agricultural systems in the Ribatejo region, Portugal. It compares maize monoculture (S1), maize with cover crop for biofumigation (S2), and maize with cover crop for forage (S3). S1 and S5 (soil cover) show negative margins of -€115.50 and -€125.00/ha, respectively, while S2 and S3 yield positive margins of €115.00 and €125.00/ha, indicating economic viability. Cover crops serve purposes including biofumigation (mustard, radish), forage (oats, vetch), and soil cover (rye, clover). Funded by the EAFRD, the project involves ISPADE, IBB, and ICAV.
