Herenboerderij Movement: Sustainable Farming in the Netherlands

Co-ownership model for regenerative, community-driven farms in the Netherlands

or

Detail description

The Herenboeren movement establishes 350 grassroots farms by 2030, uniting 150–300 shareholders per cooperative to produce vegetables, fruit, eggs, and optional meat through regenerative agriculture. Each farm spans 15–20 hectares with 1–3 part-time farmers, operating under zero-input principles. Supported by Herenboeren Nederland, the network enhances knowledge, policy, and legislation, partnering with Caring Farmers, Groenboerenplan, Aardepeer, and Plaats De Kleine Aarde. The initiative fosters co-ownership, reduces ecological footprints, strengthens local food systems, and serves as a community hub for social and agricultural innovation. Currently, 21 farms serve over 9,000 people, with hundreds more in development.
