Eco-hydrological Silviculture for Climate Adaptation in Moianès

Enhancing water availability through strategic forest management in Mediterranean ecosystems

or

Detail description

Enhanced water production and ecosystem services through eco-hydrological silviculture in Moianès, Catalonia. A 2022–2023 study by CTFC evaluated selective thinning (30% of 4,580 ha forested area) to increase drinking water availability by 25% in medium to humid years and reduce water stress days from 50 to 20. Dominated by holm oak and Aleppo pine, the region faces climate change impacts with rising temperatures and altered precipitation. Model-based projections integrate climate and soil data, supporting landscape-level planning and farm-level implementation. Findings are transferable to similar Mediterranean regions. The 2003 fire (1,800 ha) highlights the need for data-driven management. Model limitations require caution; further optimisation is recommended.
