Certification of ecosystem services enhances forest resilience in Sardinia

Sustainable forest management and ecosystem services certification in Sardinia, 2020–2023

or

Detail description

Sustainable forest management in Sardinia, covering 790 hectares, achieved FSC certification for ecosystem services between 2020 and 2023. Certified areas include Masala Antonio, Masu Gianna, Monte Sant'Antonio in Macomer, and forests in Alà dei Sardi. The process involved a Forest Management Plan, on-site evaluation, and surveillance audits. Costs ranged from €6,500 to €7,500 over five years, supported by growing demand for sustainable products and investments from large companies. Challenges include fragmented land ownership and need for technical expertise. Key forest products include cork, firewood, and mushrooms. The Region Autonoma della Sardegna, through Agroforesta Sardegna in Oristano, holds the certification. Supported by AgriSardegna and FoReSTAS, the project aligns with FSC standards, the European Commission’s 2023 guidelines on near-nature forest management, and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment.
