Pasture-Raised Lambs in Baden-Württemberg: EIP Lamb Project

Producing market-ready pasture-raised lambs in Baden-Württemberg with breed and grazing method optimization

or

Detail description

This project examines the production of market-ready, pasture-raised lambs in Baden-Württemberg, focusing on three farms to compare pasture rearing with stall rearing. It evaluates the impact of sheep breeds—Ile de France, Suffolk, Texel, Blackhead, and Merino x Merino—on parasite resistance and carcass quality. Conducted with the University of Hohenheim, the project aims to provide practical recommendations for farmers, develop a data base for breeding health traits, and implement feedback systems from slaughter to producers. Weather conditions in 2021, particularly wet summers, affected feed quality and carcass outcomes. The initiative supports regional, naturally raised lamb production to meet consumer demand and ensure competitiveness against imports.
