Cultivation of quince and specialty fruits in Hesse
Specialty fruit cultivation for regional apple juice and cider production in Hesse
or
Detail description
The Apfelland-Initiative demonstrates the economic viability of quince and specialty fruit farming in Hesse, aiming to increase regional raw material use in apple juice and cider production. Currently, 80 % of Hessian apple juice and cider relies on non-regional sources. The project assessed technical and funding requirements, engaged farmers, established pilot orchards, and studied biodiversity. By 2023, 61 hectares of quince orchards were planted in the Rhine-Main region, with a projected yield of 40 tonnes per hectare (2,440 tonnes total). Research by Hochschule Geisenheim and Justus-Liebigs-Universität Gießen found that management practices like wildflower strips, nest boxes, and hedges significantly boost biodiversity. Orchards are established on arable land, not grassland, enhancing habitats for insects and animals. Led by MGH Gutes aus Hessen GmbH, with coordination by Birgit Rose, the initiative includes partners such as Hochschule Geisenheim University, Kelterei Heil OHG, and Landwirtschaftliche Produkte.
