Drought-resistant annual forages for climate resilience

Drought-resistant forage species for extended grazing and hay production in arid conditions

or

Detail description

Drought-resistant annual forages like sorghum, millet, moha, and Teff Grass extend grazing and hay availability in arid conditions. BMR sorghum offers high energy (UFL 0.82–0.98) and supports soil moisture retention, while non-toxic millet and moha suit light soils and grazing. Teff Grass provides high protein (62.9–69.5% DCP) and energy (UFL 0.68–1.08), ideal for hay. Interplanting with legumes (e.g., Persian clover) boosts forage quality. Sow mid-May or post-harvest (July), avoid deep sowing, and rake after sowing. Case studies show 4–5 t MS/ha yields using multi-cut systems. Address toxicity in young sorghum and seed size challenges for Teff. Prioritise BMR sorghum, legume intercropping, and timing based on rainfall.
