Increase forage area and develop grain mixtures

Optimising grazing and forage self-sufficiency on a 230-goat farm in Tarn (2018–2021)

or

Detail description

The 230-goat farm in Tarn (2018–2021) achieved 96% forage self-sufficiency through rotational grazing, PME expansion, and soil forage analysis. Key actions included fencing improvements, cessation of commercial crops, and sowing Swiss grass-legume mixes. Despite reduced milk yield and health challenges, operational efficiency improved via better milking and nursery management. Funded by the European Agricultural and Rural Development Fund and Occitanie Agit, the project reduced concentrate use and increased grain forage in winter rations. Economic costs rose per UMO, but margins declined. The initiative was successful and scalable to other breeders.
