Ration balance and multi-species pastures
Multi-species grass-legume mixtures as sustainable alfalfa alternatives on argilo-calcareous soil with high manure inputs
or
Detail description
The GOPEI Cap & Go project evaluated multi-species grass-legume mixtures as sustainable alternatives to alfalfa on argilo-calcareous soil with high fertilizer inputs (40–50 t/ha manure every 1–2 years). The trial, conducted from 2021–2022, tested three mixtures for lodging resistance, longevity (4 years), and energy efficiency. Mélange 1 (alfalfa-dominant) yielded 4.2 t MS/ha, Mélange 2 (red clover-dominant) 3.7 t MS/ha, and alfalfa-only 2.0 t MS/ha. Challenges included heavy rainfall, runoff, and drought. Results indicate potential for improved sustainability and yield.
