Green feeding for sustainable goat farming in Méllè

Sustainable goat farming with 58% feed autonomy at GAEc GOARIG VIHAN in Méllè

or

Detail description

The GAEc Goarig Vihan goat farm in Méllè, Ille-et-Vilaine, manages 500 Saanen goats on 50 hectares using sustainable green feeding practices. With 58% feed material autonomy, the farm relies on silage, temporary pastures, and self-consumed cereals. Rotational planting of English Ryegrass, Red Clover, and maize supports high yields (10,000 L/ha) and soil fertility. A feeding robot ensures consistent feed availability. The herd achieves 1,000 L/mare/year, with low costs (€1.25/1,000 L) and 49% EBIT. Challenges include seeding difficulties and workload; best practices include avoiding feed piles and using nitrogen-tannin correctors. The herd is CAEV-free, and the farm plans to continue green feeding with Red Clover.
